Meet the Experts: Neil Bircumshaw
We’re delighted to welcome Neil Bircumshaw, aka Nelly, to our support team, who brings with him an impressive 32 years of telecoms experience.
As Senior IT & Support Executive, Neil will be supporting our IT Director, Andrew Myers, as well as our customer support team. He will be installing gigabit fibre and phone systems as well as supporting our clients with any telecom queries.
Just a handful of questions prompted some great stories and we can’t wait to hear more as we get to know him even better.
What was your first job?
One of the children who attended my mum’s Sunday School grew up to become the Director of Intercom. Around the time I was finishing school, they won a huge contract and were looking for temporary apprentices. I took the opportunity and on my first day – the 2nd of June 1986 – I did my very first install of Vision2000 at Boots. My plan at the time had been to go to college to study mechanics after the summer, but when I got offered a permanent role six weeks later, I accepted and ended up staying with Intercom for a further 15 years before working with another telecoms company. The rest as they say is history.
Do you have a secret talent?
Since a teen I have loved roller-skating and still skate today!
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Happy, Resourceful & Helpful.
If you could learn a new skill what would it be?
Anything - because I enjoy learning new things. But if I had to choose one then it would be how to Jive! Yes, I have been known to throw a few shapes such as the head spin and windmill, but this is a dance style I’d love to learn.
What has been the most important innovation you have witnessed in your lifetime?
When the communication system changed from analogue strowger switch to hybrid key telephone system, which was 1,000 times smaller and did the same job. The impact of this small circuit to me is much more significant than innovations such as even the internet.
What’s your proudest achievement?
My son and my daughter!
Who would you swap places with for a day?
I would choose Lewis Hamilton because I’ve always followed Formula 1 and am a big fan. As for what I would do that day – I’d love to race against Mick Hawthorn or Jenson Button.
What’s the last book you read?
I really enjoy reading Jeremy Clarkson for his humour.
Where’s your dream holiday destination?
The Maldives. I would arrive on a sea plane which would pull up to a villa with a glass walkway over the water so I could see the fish swimming underneath. In fact there would be no walls just a bed and glorious view of the sea and landscape – you did say dream holiday after all!
