DIVA’S BIG YEAR OF FUNDRAISING PAYS OFF…
As 2018 draws to a close, we take a reflective look back at our action-packed year of fundraising for Dogs Trust Leeds and tell you all about the day we got to present our charity with a big cheque for £512. It was a proud moment for us and hopefully we’ve made a difference to the dogs we love so much.
Extending a helping hand to man’s best friend
We’ve been supporting Leeds Dogs Trust since 2014 and have gotten to know the dedicated team at the centre really well. It’s easy to see just how important their work is and how much care the dogs receive as a result.
The Diva team visited them last Christmas, spreading holiday joy with toys and gifts for the furry residents. You can read more about that lovely day and our 2017 activities, here. It was then we decided we wanted to vamp up Diva Telecom’s efforts even more for 2018 – but how?
Smashing our donation target with fun & laughter
We kicked off our efforts by introducing a second sponsored dog, Stanley, into the fold who joined Jake, the first dog Diva Telecom sponsored back in 2016.
What was to be next?
For those loyal followers of ours, you will’ve seen that Aimee Crossland (Marketing Assistant) and Rachel Skelton (Web Developer) took part in July 2018’s Tough Mudder, which proved a huge fundraising success and was the driving force behind the year’s resulting total of £512.
But we didn’t stop there.
To encourage donations and raise awareness, we took to social media to promote our Just Giving page, and also launched an office snack box initiative, rallying around the office grounds to drum up as much support as we could manage.
A sniff behind the scenes at Leeds Dogs Trust
Later in the year we sent a few of our team members to the trust, where they presented the £512 voucher, visited the sponsored dogs and witnessed exactly what goes into their daily care behind the scenes.
The sheer level of commitment the staff and volunteers at Leeds Dog Trust put into their work is astounding. You can’t fail to recognise it everywhere you walk. It further demonstrated the importance – and size – of their mission to protect our four-legged friends from harm.
With everything from feeding, sleeping, exercise, playtime, grooming and even a non-stop laundry room, on-site vet and adoption showroom, the money they receive quite clearly goes right back into ensuring their dogs are fully catered for.
“After the visit to Leeds Dogs Trust, the team came back with great stories and were quite clearly touched by what they’d seen. It just motivates us even more to do what we can to support this hardworking charity. Making a difference, big or small, is just another way of bringing us together and I would appeal to anyone to consider adopting a dog.” – Erica Lewis, Managing Director of Diva Telecom
A dog for Christmas? Don’t do it.
Dogs Trust recently revealed that in the weeks following the Christmas period last year, they received over 5,000 calls – 138 per day – from UK owners wishing to hand over their unwanted puppies and dogs.
As much as they would like to, the charity can’t take them all.
It then becomes a race against time to not only offer shelter to as many dogs as possible, so they don’t end up being unnecessarily put to sleep, but also to educate the public so they think twice before they rush out to buy a puppy or dog without serious contemplation.
Our end-of-year public appeal
If you’ve thought about buying a dog for a loved one this Christmas but, like us, you know that getting one is much like having a child and not a decision to be taken lightly (they need a lot more than cuddles and a bowl of treats), adopting one from Leeds Dogs Trust instead might just be the perfect middle ground!
Chances are, their previous owners found out the distressing way that a dog isn’t for Christmas and had to give them up – now there’s a cute wet nose in need of some TLC. Can you help?
“The high numbers of abandoned dogs at Christmas is heart-breaking and serves as a reminder to take the purchase of dogs as pets seriously. They can’t ask for help, but we can on their behalf. We will continue our efforts in 2019 and hope the number of dogs needing to be rehomed reduces as awareness grows.” – Erica Lewis, Managing Director of Diva Telecom
Any help or form of support goes such a long way and truly makes a difference so if you’d like to find out more and contribute towards bringing about “a day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction” (Dogs Trust Mission, Website), then be sure to click here.
